Toni was captivated from the moment she discovered silk painting. She is heavily involved in the local arts scene, including serving as President of Arts Obispo, the San Luis Obispo County arts council.

In her free time, Toni and her husband, Doug, enjoy walking their Westies, Zoey and Zack, on the beach.

Toni Bouman Realized her Life’s Dream, only to Discover a Doorway to Something even Better.

There’s an old saying: “Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it”. As a young girl, Toni fell in love with sewing. Her grandmother was a seamstress who taught her to sew at a young age. By her 11th birthday, Toni was making her own clothes. By 16, she was creating her own custom designs and decided to pursue a career as a clothing designer.

Once she achieved that goal at 21, she soon realized that something was missing. Creating one design that was sent into mass production lacked the fulfilling nature of the custom designs she’d made for herself previously. Toni quickly came to the realization that the element she loved the most – individuality – was lacking in fashions ready to wear market. She decided to pursue another career path and returned to college.

All’s Well That Ends Well

Fortunately for Toni, she later discovered a career in real estate that was more fulfilling on multiple levels than she could have ever imagined; while at the same time finding a hobby that provided an outlet for her artistic creativity. “It only took one silk painting class and I was hooked for life”, she recalls.

Toni has since become an expert silk painter which has led her to the ancient art of Shibori. Both activities use dyes to paint on silk. Once the silk is dyed the color is permanent. Toni particularly loves that no two pieces are ever alike. This hobby has since blossomed into the creation of silk pillows and table runners as well as fine art which Toni now uses to stage her listings to give them those added decorator touches that make them stand out from the competition. From there, Toni has continued her education by taking professional staging courses through Interior Redesign Industry Specialists and Realty Enhancements International.

Putting Creativity to Good Use

Toni sees multiple parallels between her unusual hobby and her longstanding career in Central Coast real estate. Just as she thrives on the ingenuity of silk painting and Shibori, she views each real estate transaction as an opportunity to use her creativity to her clients’ advantage. “People might not think that real estate is a creative field but you have to constantly find creative ways to negotiate to bring a buyer and seller together. You have to find new creative ways to market your listings. It requires creativity in staging homes so they look their best. That’s why I love what I do so much! I can use all of my talents, have fun and provide benefits to buyers and sellers that no other real estate agent can.

Toni brings impressive credentials to every transaction as well. Immediately after college, she embarked on a career path in commercial real estate that soon found her managing a real estate portfolio valued in excess of $1 billion for a Fortune 500 company. When she and her husband decided to move to the Central Coast in 1990, she transitioned to residential real estate, and earned her place among the area’s leading agents ever since. Her office, Re/Max Del Oro, was recently voted Best Real Estate Office in San Luis Obispo County!
