It can be a sobering experience to accomplish your dream in life only to realize that it wasn’t what you wanted. Just ask Toni Bouman. As a young girl, she absolutely loved sewing. Her grandmother was a seamstress who taught Toni to sew at a young age. By her 11th birthday, Toni was making her own clothes. By 16, she was creating her own custom designs and decided to pursue a career as a clothing designer.
Once she achieved that goal, however, she soon realized that something just wasn’t the same. Creating one design that was sent into mass production lacked the fulfilling nature of the custom designs she’d made for herself all those years prior. Toni quickly came to the realization that the element she loved most individuality wasn’t a component of the career path she’d chosen. She decided to pursue a new career path and returned to college.
All’s Well that Ends Well
Fortunately for Toni, she later discovered a career in real estate that she found more fulfilling than anything she could ever imagine. And she also found a hobby that provided an outlet for her spirit of creativity and thirst for individuality. “It only took one silk painting class and I was hooked,” she recalls.
Today, Toni has become an expert silk painter, a precise activity that uses dyes to color each individual work of art. Once silk is dyed, the color is permanent. Toni especially loves that no two pieces are alike. This hobby allows her to use her creativity to create multiple works of art where no two are the same.
Putting Creativity to Good Use
Toni sees multiple parallels between this unusual hobby and her longstanding career in Central Coast real estate. Just as she thrives on the ingenuity of silk painting, she views each real estate transaction as an opportunity to use her creativity to her clients’ advantage. “People might not think that real estate is a creative field but you have to constantly think outside the box to find ways to bring a buyer and seller together. You have to find new ways to market listings. It requires creativity in staging homes so they look their best. That’s why I love what I do so much!”
Toni brings impressive credentials to every transaction as well. Immediately after college, she embarked on a career path in commercial real estate that soon found her managing a real estate portfolio valued in excess of $1 billion for a Fortune 500 company. When she and her husband decided to move to the Central Coast in 1990, she transitioned to residential real estate, and has earned her place among the area’s leading agents ever since.
